An EMT, or Emergency Medical Technician, is a first responder to an emergency situation. Emergency Medical Technicians assess patient injury, do triage, administer emergency medical care, and get the injured to hospitals or other medical facilities. What do EMTs do? Where do they work? How do I become an EMT? This is a fast-paced, high intensity career where you are responsible for people’s lives. Train for a career in the adrenaline-pumping field of emergency medicine and make a real difference in the lives of others. By 2022, there will be 120,600 job openings for EMTs in the United States.3 EMTs Duties: Administer first aid treatment or life support care prior to patient being taken to a hospital Use life-saving medical equipment including, EKGs, defibrillators, and bag valve mask resuscitators Perform on-scene and in transit emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures including, clearing airway and monitoring heart Prepare patient for ambulance transport using backboard or other spinal immobilization device Assess illness or injury to prioritize medical procedures Treat during transport to hospital including, administering drugs orally or by injection Observe, record, and communicate patient condition to physician Operate and maintain transport vehicles and medical equipment Where do EMTs work? Nearly half of all EMTs work for ambulance companies. About 30% work for the government in fire or police departments.3 How to become an EMT1 Both a high school diploma or equivalent and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification are prerequisites for most EMT training programs. Working as an EMT requires post-secondary education and state licensure. 43% of working EMTs earn EMT certificates 30% have completed some college with no degree 12% earn an associate degree EMT training programs combine classroom work with hands-on training. Programs include instruction in assessing patients' conditions, dealing with trauma and cardiac emergencies, clearing obstructed airways, using field equipment, and handling emergencies. Students must have a broad understanding of anatomy and physiology and in-depth knowledge of triage procedures, CPR, airway management, and trauma treatment techniques.
